The Top 10 Profitable Niches for Instagram Influencers

Looking to make money and get real Instagram followers? Not sure what to do or where to start? If anything, you’re spoiled for choice, with nearly two thousand market niches available to explore.

That said, some are obviously better than others. You don’t want a somewhat profitable niche, or a reasonably profitable market.

You’re in it to win it. You want one of the most profitable niches.

And it’s a win-win scenario: the best way to get Instagram followers is to pick a profitable niche, because if it’s profitable, it’s popular. And if it’s popular, there’s always demand for more content.

Besides, there’s always room for the next big creator or influencer in even the most crowded markets. That could be you. If not, even a small segment of the available profit is still going to be worthwhile. See? Win-win.

Do the work. Reap the rewards.

There Are 1959+ Market Niches

At last count, there was just under two thousand market niches on Instagram, making it very likely that your passion and/or business niche is already there and waiting for you, to say nothing of the fact that new niches are emerging all the time. That’s good.

Combine that with the fact that Instagram now boasts over one billion active monthly users, 500 million daily active users, and 31% of people making more than 75K/year (and 32% of those in the 50-74K range, and 32% of those between 30-49K) are on the platform, and you’ve got a massive audience with plenty of expendable income looking to spend on you, your products, and your recommendations.

But it gets better: images posted on Facebook via Instagram get 23% more engagement than those posted directly, and brands typically have engagement from 4% of their followers (compared to only 0.7% for Facebook and 0.3% for Twitter).

The platform itself is impressive, and it actually makes other platforms better, too.

Instagram is popular, growing, powerful, and effective. Instagram influencers are well-known with a very wide reach.

What are you waiting for? Pick a niche. Jump in.

What Is a Niche?

Let’s slow down for a sec. I keep telling you that the best way to get Instagram followers is to pick a profitable niche.

Quick question: what exactly is a niche market? If we don’t have a clear understanding of that, the advice to pick a profitable one falls on deaf ears.

Basically, a niche is a segment or sub-section of a larger market. A piece of the pie. A market is pet owners, while niches within that include dogs, cats, birds, fish, lizards, rodents, and so on. You can even drill further down within each niche to, say, work dogs, lap dogs, hunting dogs, and more.

Defining your niche market means you have a crystal clear idea about who you’re selling to (and all the demographic and psychological data that goes with it), what they want or need, and how you can give it to them.

Picking a niche makes it easier to target, market, and deliver. Why spend time and money marketing to cat owners when you sell waterproof collars and leashes for Portuguese water dogs?

Niche. Target. Market.

What Makes a Niche Profitable?

However, not all niches are created equal. It’s possible to pick a niche that’s too niche. Would you start a business selling waterproof collars for Portuguese water dogs named Edwin owned by people named Bryan? Let’s hope not. It wouldn’t be very profitable.

In order to be profitable, a niche needs sufficient numbers.

Are enough people interested in it to generate recurring revenue over time? Are people already spending money in the niche? Can you solve a pain point, problem, need, or want for them? Can you fill a gap or improve upon an existing solution?

If you can answer ‘yes’ to those questions, you’ve got yourself a profitable niche.

And lest you believe you need to sell something in order to generate profit, I’m here to tell you that you’re wrong.

Creating, marketing, and selling your products to your Instagram followers is just one way to make money on the platform.

You could also drive traffic to existing products and services using affiliate links, or sell ads, mentions, and shoutouts for others.

Plenty of monetization options. Plenty of niches.

Maybe too many.

Do You Know The Most Profitable Ones For Instagram Influencers?

I’ve already told you there are nearly two thousand of them on Instagram. Of course, many of them are too small, too niche, or not profitable enough.

So where do you fit in? If you have an existing product or service, your niche is already chosen for you. If not, ask yourself:

  • What am I passionate about?
  • In what niches am I a customer?
  • What are my hobbies? Areas of expertise? Work experience?

Find something that’s a good balance of passion and knowledge to start on the right foot. Ultimately, though, if you want maximum profitability, you need to look to the niches that are already profitable.

As the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

These are the top ten most profitable and popular Instagram niches in 2018 and beyond.

Top 10 Profitable Niches For Instagram Influencers

Trendy market niches come and go. Hitching your wagon to the latest craze isn’t necessarily a bad idea, but you never know when it might disappear. Your best bet is finding something appropriate in what we could call the ‘evergreen’ markets.

These are the markets, categories, and niches that are always going to be popular, fresh, and in vogue. Like the tree that shares the name, they never fade or lose their lustre (or leaves!).

1. Health and Fitness

There will always be demand for health and fitness products, solutions, services, tools, content, and updates. Everyone is concerned about their health – physical, mental, emotional, or otherwise – and/or fitness to at least some degree.

The wellness industry alone was worth $4.2 trillion in 2017. Trillion. With a capital ‘T’. That’s 12.8% growth from the 2015 figure of ‘only’ $3.7 trillion. The World Health Organization defines wellness as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.

Likewise, the fitness industry is expected to hit $87.5 billion by the end of 2018.

Share your health, wellness, or fitness journey. Offer tips, tricks, and hacks. Recommend and suggest products and services, either your own, or those of others. Health and fitness influencers have a huge audience always hungry for more.

A market size in the billions. Dollars-spent in the trillions. If that’s not the definition of profitable, I don’t know what is.

Within the health and fitness market, some of the most profitable and popular niches include:

  • Weightlifting (the #weightlifting hashtag has over 13 million posts)
  • Football (50 million)
  • Basketball (21 million)
  • Soccer (28 million)
  • Crossfit (42 million)
  • Yoga (58 million)
  • Tennis (8 million)
  • Cycling (19 million)
  • Extreme Sports (880,000)
  • High-intensity Interval Training (#HIIT has 5 million posts)
  • Fitness Technology (2700)
  • Bodyweight Training (948,000)

2. Beauty

Primarily – but not exclusively – appealing to women, the beauty industry isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, the cosmetics industry is projected to top $863 billion by 2024.

Beauty influencers like Christen Dominique share how-tos, product reviews, tutorials, and more. #Beauty has over 276 million posts attached to it, and that number continues to climb. And because this is such a visual subject, it works magically with Instagram (whose user base in 50.3% female, coincidentally). Some of the best niches include:

  • Makeup (201 million)
  • Nails (95 million)
  • Skincare (31 million)
  • Hair (166 million, and #hairstyles has 20 million)

3. Travel

We all fantasize about adventures in far off and exotic places. We all have a “dream vacation” on our bucket list. Travel is big, big bucks and popular with virtually everyone. The industry was worth $5.29 trillion in 2017, with international travel growing for the eighth year in a row.

But – because of that remarkable popularity – you need to be ultra-specific with your niche if you want to make an impact. Review and recommend places to stay, places to eat, cities at large, products, airlines, ways to get around, and visually stunning photos and videos for people in these specific niches:

  • Backpackers (2.5 million)
  • Campers (259,000)
  • Business Travelers (1800)
  • Outdoor Enthusiasts (4000)

Instagram influencers are literally putting the travel industry on its head. In fact, 40% of millennials consider “instagammability” a top priority when considering their next vacation.

4. Business/Making Money Online

Money makes the world go ‘round. This market doesn’t need a whole lot of additional explanation.

What’s more, it’s got serious evergreen strength and universal appeal. People of all nationalities, languages, religions, personality type, and more want to make more money than they’re making today. And making money online is easier than ever before.

Tips, tricks, hacks, and how-tos are invaluable within this one. Provide lots of high quality, useful, and free info, and the followers will materialize, and they will buy from you when the time comes.

  • eCommerce (2.7 million)
  • Marketing (23.5 million)
  • Entrepreneurship (10.5 million)
  • Starting a Business (24,000)

5. Fashion

The fashion industry might have a lot of overlap with beauty, but it’s a heavyweight in its own right, with the worldwide fashion and apparel ecommerce industry currently valued at $481 billion and predicted to grow to $713 billion by 2022.

This is another one for which Instagram seems a tailor-made platform.

  • Clothing (23 million)
  • Jewelry (55 million)
  • Accessories (37 million)
  • Watches (11 million)

6. Luxury/Lifestyle

The luxury industry gives us a peek at the sweet life, while the lifestyle industry is rooted perhaps a bit more in reality. Regardless, they’re both tremendously popular and profitable.

And there’s nothing wrong with living vicariously through prominent influencers like Clint Johnston or Kiersten Rich.

  • Super Cars (7.5 million)
  • Houses (3.2 million)
  • Super Boats (3600)
  • Travel (347 million)

Everyone likes the finer things.

7. Animals

The pet industry in the U.S. cracked $86 billion in 2017. Pet care is forecast to exceed $202 billion worldwide in the next few years. Grooming products. Breed tips. Food. Toys. Health services. Pet insurance. Clothing. Costumes. Treats. Charities. And on and on and on.

We. Love. Animals. And we’re not afraid to prove it with our wallets. Tap into that potential.

  • Pet Care (383,000)
  • Cute Animals (2.6 million)

8. Relationships

Everyone has them, but none of us truly feel like we know what we’re doing.

  • Friends (341 million)
  • Parenting (6 million)
  • Business Relationships/Networking (10,000 and 5.5 million, respectively).

9. Gaming

Those of you with kids – or husbands, for that matter – already know that gaming is worth big bucks. How big? $137.9 billion globally in 2018.

People spend on the games themselves, consoles, guides, walkthroughs, and even to watch other people play and/or review the newest and most anticipated games on YouTube or Twitch.

Influencers like PewDiePie – with 14.5 million followers on Instagram and 71 (!) million subscribers on YouTube – make a fortune playing video games for a living.

Let that sink in. Then get in on it.

10. Family/Parenting

A subset of the Relationships market, the family and parenting niche is growing exponentially. Every new parent is afraid they’re doing it wrong and goes looking for the advice, recommendation, and/or products to make it all better. The global baby care product industry is valued at $73.86 billion in 2018.

Family and parenting influencers appeal to everyone because we can relate. We all have a family even if we don’t have children. It’s part of the human condition.

So, where do you fit in?

Choosing The Niche is Just Part of The Process

Of course, choosing a niche is just one part of a multi-step process. You won’t start raking in boatloads of cash simply because you selected a profitable niche and created an account.

Using Instagram for business includes choosing a profitable niche, growing your following, and delivering consistently high quality content.

You need to build trust and authority. Develop your reputation. Create spectacular content. Get real followers. And grow that following.

Instagram for business is a no-brainer, but it’s not a get-rich-quick scheme or gimmick. It’s a tactic and channel that has consistently proven itself if you put in the time and effort.

And that’s where Social Upgrade can help.

Defining a Winning Influencer Marketing Strategy

You need a strategy to become the kind of influencer that pulls in dollars and makes a difference.

Sign up with us, provide some insight on your targets, and we’ll deliver the best way to get Instagram followers. You create. We’ll promote.

Profitable niches may have fierce competition, but that’s because they work. If you find a niche that few if any people are using, there’s probably a reason why (although you can sometimes stumble upon a tiny niche on the cusp of profitability and get in on the ground floor).

Match your passion with your niche, your market with your expertise, and you’re halfway to Instagram profitability.

Social Upgrade can help with that second half.
